Mansfield Hydroelectic Dam At long last we were able to take a field trip to Mansfield Dam. This dam is part of the LCRA and is located about 35 minutes from Zavala. We had scheduled a field trip for this fall last July, but security was tightened at all power producing facilities under the jurisdiction of LCRA in late September. The dam was opened to school groups on Monday, March 18th and we visited on the 22nd. Below you will be able to read comments from some of the students on the trip and see the pictures that we took at the time. Comments: “It was real cool coming to the Mansfield Dam cause we got to see the routers and they are so big that I also thought that Mansfield Dam is one of the biggest dam I have ever seen.” – Ruby “I have never been that close to a dam, and to go inside is incredible” Michael V. “When we went to Mansfield Dam our guide told us that the crane weighed 125 tons. He also showed us 3 generators that were very huge. The dam was 266ft. tall. The concrete in the dam takes up 1.8 million cubic yards.” Mercedes “Even though Mansfield Dam has it’s own web site I found out more information about it when we actually went there. I didn’t know that it didn’t affect the environment very much once it was built. Mr. Hamilton, the tour guide and engineer for Mansfield, told us that Mansfield dam became friends with the environment around them.” Gabby
