Principles of an Atlatl

Principles of an Atlatl will instruct you on the history and development of the atlatl, an ancient device used to propel a spear with the force necessary to bring down larger game from a relatively safe distance. You will be challenged to hit a target by changing either the length of the atlatl or the angle of your throw. The figure that is throwing the spear in the game bears no resemblance to the teacher of the ZYS class, no matter what my students tell you. (It seems as though university seniors still have a sense of humor, twisted though it may be!)

For Energy in the Present:

Power Surge

Power Surge is a game that will allow you to find out how expensive it is to operate different household items that use electricity. You will also be able to compare the price of electricity generated by the different means that we have studied.

The software programs were developed exclusively for the Zavala Young Scientists class last fall. They were the projects of a class of Computer Science majors in CS373 at the University of Texas at Austin. The University students visited our classroom periodically as the programs developed to ensure that each program was suiting the needs of this year’s IPSD project. At the end of the fall semester all three teams visited our classroom and presented their final products to our class. Many thanks go to those students and their professor, Dr. Vicki Almstrum, for their cooperation and diligence. We hope you find their work entertaining and educational.
