Austin Science Fun Day

Our metropolitan showcase of science took place on Saturday, March 2, 2002 at the Texas Memorial Museum of Science and History. This city-wide event, in its 9th year, is a day long celebration of science in which students are the experts. Over 25 science organizations partnered with classroom teachers and students for a year-long science investigation. On Science Fun Day, students presented activities at booths that reflected what they had studied throughout the year. About 5000 people visited the event. Zavala Young Scientists won a Scholar's Award Ribbon for their booth.

Read the comments of several of the students below concerning this challenging and exciting activity. Also check out the pictures of our displays and the video clips of our students teaching the visitors about energy.

Comments:

"On Fun Day it was so cool to talk to many adults who did not know much about what we were telling them. I felt proud of myself because I was teaching other people about what I learned."-Caresa

" When it was Fun Day, we talked about our posters and experiments that we had done in class. We were excited when we people started asking us questions." Victoria

"I really enjoyed this day because I got to explain what I knew about hydroelectric .I even got to explain in a different language (Spanish) because he didn't know English .I even went all around to see other peoples work." Emily

"Going to Science Fun Day was a really new experience for me, because I had the chance to talk to people about our experiments and what we had learned. Also what I liked most of all is when I had other people explain to me about the experiments they had, and talking to other people of different cultures was a new experience." Antonio

"On fun day I really enjoyed the experience of being the teacher instead of the student for once." Youssef

" It was fun and we got to talk to people about what we had learned." Christyn

"I knew what I was going to say. But when people from other countries came and started talking, I had no idea what they were saying. A lot of them learned, as well as I did because people were telling me more then what I know". Veronica

"Fun Day was an experience for me. I was talking to adults that actually knew less than me on the topic." Bronson

"It was fun because I got to talk to people about fossil fuel, Also I got to look at other kids' projects and they were pretty cool." Ashley

"It was a great opportunity for us because we had a chance to explain to different cultures, and learn some of the opinions of others. We also had a chance to go around and look at the other science projects. That let us learn more about the projects." Amanda

"Now I know how teachers feel teaching a class. It is very fun seeing peoples' reactions to how much we know." Tony

"Fun Day was cool because we got to teach adults about energies and experiments".
Stacey

"Zavala Fun Day was a big experience for me to talk to other people from different languages and instead of adults teaching us how to make electricity we were teaching them." Sharon

"I think that it was kind of a cool day because we got to see the other groups from other schools and also learned some new things about them. I think it was also interesting answering questions from adults that were real difficult to answer. I enjoyed being there because I also met new friends and other people." - Ruby

"It was a very cool experience talking to people who didn't know anything about energy and to see their reactions" Michael

"It was a different experience to explain our ideas about energy to a person that speaks a different language. It is also a lot of work to explain to the kids because they ask a lot of questions and if we used scientific words they asked, "What does that mean?" Kaelie

"It was a fun experience because, instead of a adult explaining something to me, I was explaining to them." Marlen

"On Fun day it was fun because I had to teach people about energy sources that I didn't know as well as my own - geothermal." Leo

I was explaining how fossil fuels are good and bad in a way to a Japanese man. First when I was explaining that natural gas was good, he responded, "Fossil fuel good?" I told him, "… except for coal and oil, coal gives diseases to miners and oil pollutes the air." He said, "Fossil fuel bad?" After saying that 2 times a lady explained it to him very slowly, I guess he didn't understand my English that well." Gabby
