During our year-long study of energy, we have all learned a lot about the power of science as a tool to discover more about the world we live in. We have also gained a better understanding of the importance of energy in our lives. Follow along with us as we share with you what we have learned and how our studies have brought deeper meaning to  “Science is Power” and “Energy Everywhere”.

This site contains the work of many people. Special thanks go to Janice Sturrock of the Austin Nature and Science Center, Dan Prikyl and Amanda Huston of the LCRA, Margaret Bamberger of the Bamberger Ranch, Jason Hook from Kealing Junior High School, and Dr. Vicki Almstrum of The University of Texas. Without their help we could not have made this work what it is.

But my deepest thanks go to those whose work is proudly displayed on the following pages, the students of the Zavala Young Scientists class of 2002. They accepted the challenge of this considerable undertaking. Without their persistence, diligence, and effort, it would not have been possible.

I would also like to acknowledge the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Franklin Institute, and Unisys for putting together International Public Science Day 2002. Fro two years this program has been an inspiration to me and my students to challenge ourselves and discover our best. The intense effort that we have given this year has been driven by the high standards these three organizations have set. For me as an elementary school teacher, it has been a formidable task to incorporate this project into our already rigorous Austin Independent School District curriculum. A quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. occupies a prominent spot in my classroom. It says, “Man's mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.”  I have discovered what an extremely rewarding experience it can be to motivate my students through meaningful and thorough study. I will forever be a better teacher for this project.

Very special thanks to Mr. Todd McDowell, teacher extraordinare and great person, who spent countless hours and much love in developing and implementing this project.
