Cecil Taylor with Tony Oxley

Ulrichsberger Kaleidophon, Austria

A recording has recently surfaced from Hannes Schneider! Details forthcoming!

and personal recollection from Hannes Schneider:

"a very energetic concert with some lyrical parts, alas, for the audience the equilibration between piano and drums wasn´t quite in place, the drums being too dominant for major parts of the concert. the tape, however, is quite ok for a private recording. an additional highlight, however, was the rehearsal, which took place sameday in the afternoon, where we stumbled in by chance. one of my finest experiences of a ct concert up to now (and i have about 50 of those!): very concentrated, very subtle, calm and with extended use of cecils graphical music annotations. nevertheless, not a stop-and-go thing, rather the complete concert with some short intermissions, as presented later in public. also the atmosphere was very relaxed, and in all, i would guess the persons listening about 6 to 10 (highest) - a very exclusive range indeed!
in a nutshell, i would call it the academic, yet relaxed approach, whereas the concert was more the speedy, forceful power-based approach.
(no, i did not tape that. the machine was not there, and i rather wouldenjoy listening)"

From knittingfactory.com:

"Pianist Cecil Taylor, along with Ornette Coleman, is the father of free jazz. Soon after his emergence in the mid-'50s, he was the most advanced improviser in jazz; five decades later he is still the most radical. Having worked with everyone from John Coltrane and Clark Terry to Steve Lacy and Evan Parker, his vision and sound remain singular. All Music Guide uses the words "Intense, Fiery, Complex, Brash, Provocative, Autumnal, Aggressive, Cerebral, Elegant, Volatile." You've never heard anything like it, and as he is, to this day, decades ahead of his time, you likely never will. Typically performing solo, duo, and in small units, this upcoming performance with a 25-piece orchestra is a rare treat, especially within the intimate confines of the Knitting Factory."

There was an early show and a late show. A very nice recording exists of the early show. The late show was supposedly taped but a tape has yet to surface. -JH

"The Knitting Factory engagement (02.06.20 & 02.06.21) represented the premiere of his work _With Blazing Eyes and Open'd Mouth_, commissioned by SVO with funding from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust. All four concerts were professionally recorded for archival purposes. Assif Tsahar sat in with the band both nights, and Gloria Tropp was featured as guest vocalist in the very last set (02.06.21)." -a. scott curie

"Our Macedonian concert was at the Skopje Jazz Festival (Universal Hall, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia) on 22 October, not 20 October (which casts some doubt on the apocryphal Paris concert listed as 02.10.22...)...
This concert was also professionally recorded for archival purposes, and video footage may have been shot and broadcast by Macedonian National Television [MRT]." - a. scott

Cecil Taylor Solo, Duo and Trio

Cecil Taylor (p)
Tony Oxley (d)
Bill Dixon (b)

Cite de la Musique, Paris

"Tony Oxley made a solo performance for 30 minutes, followed by a recitation/warm-up by Cecil, for 30 minutes too. After a short interlude, Bill Dixon showed up, and played alone for 20 minutes - then CT and TO entered for an incredible rendition of their latest studio session, that lasted exactly 90 minutes. To our greatest amazement, they played some BLUES lines for half of the second set... No Encore. "
