CECIL TAYLOR SOLO

Cecil Taylor (p)

Knitting Factory, nyc

"Cecil played solo that night, one set only as part of the Knitting Factory's monthlong 10th anniversary celebration. Composer Philip Glass also played a solo set that evening; as I remember it, Glass was first and Taylor second."

Primary source:
steve smith, in personal email to jason on 1/15/05:

I was the head of P.R. for the Knit at the time and remember that entire month vividly, but I also tracked down a corroborating dated mention in the archives of The Atlantic Monthly:

CECIL TAYLOR TRIO

October 3rd, 1997
The Cooler, New York City, New York, USA

Set List:

Improvisation

Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth performed a set with Tom Surgal, then the Cecil Taylor Trio played, then Thurston played again w. Dominic Duval, Jackson Krall, and Surgal.

Notes from James H's email:
"Here's what Thurston told a friend of mine about that tape-

"its me w/ jackson krall and tom surgal - drums - and dominic duval - bass --- we played one set together one night and some horrible sax player bum rushed the stage and played w/ us stopping cecil from joining in - the next night we played again together w/out the fucked sax player and cecil did
indeed join us 20 minutes into the meal. video exists of both nights in total - but they are not "circulated" t"

The tape that circulates is from the first night, without Cecil. The sound quality on that tape isn't so great, either. No known tapes circulate of the 2nd night, with Cecil. "

Primary source: audio tape exists, video tape exsists, acc. to thurston moore (see below), http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/cc/sytour.html, James Hildreth in email correspondance to JH on 01.04.16.

also, in personal email to jason, joe pierre on 2/6/05:
cecil played with dominik duvall and jackson krall at the Jazz Bakery in October 1997. He was there the 7th (Monday) through the 12th (Sunday) and played two sets per night, one at 8:30 and one at 10:00 (except on Sunday when the times were 6 and 8). I was there on the 8th for the first set, but so few attended, they allowed us to stay for the 2nd set without an additional admission fee. i do remember that cecil played some usually "lyrical" phrases that were really pretty, and he recited some poetics, but mostly it was the trio going full blast.
