Cecil Taylor Quartet: Parker, Andre Martinez, Greg Bendian / Teatro do Hotel Nacional de Rio, Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil

"On this tour were Max Roach, Odean Pope, George Benson, Horace Silver, the Count Basie Big Band with Joe Williams, and John Zorn. The first gig was in Rio in a concert hall-- the event was called 'Free Jazz', a term they were not sure what it actually meant till they heard Cecil. ...the people who heard us in San Paolo began to walk out, but those that stayed flipped over the music. Two of the people in the audience were Hermeto Pascual and Djamalo Correa, two of Brazil's most respected geniuses of music. Not to mention the club hopping all night with them and Cecil, William and myself. We later hung [at] Rio Jazz Club located in the Hotel Meridien where Sivuca was playing. It's funny you mentioned this gig because William brought it to my attention the other night. He said 'remember when we went looking
for instruments in the rough part of town?' and I said yes. 'Remember carrying all those instruments down these slum type neighborhoods to find Gope, a main percussion store for pandieros and whistles and no one bothered us. And remember when the percussionist from Gilberto Gil's band saw us walking around and thought we were crazy to take such chances and he put us in a cab back to the hotel?' And William said 'but when the spirit is correct the forces will protect you we are dealing with people and they can sense your spirit and honesty'. ...William and myself jammed Samba with the hotel band every day... While in Rio D. Janeiro I had a some kind of spiritual experience-- an Orisha type
invasion or an anxiety attack-- and I was in my room by myself feeling strange and the next you know Sir William, who's room was next door, comes in without notice and puts headphones on me and plays this beautiful music that totally calmed me down-- then left back to his room next door. A truly spiritual experience for me."
