igor danilishen's thorough analysis of this show: "Well I guess most likely they also played what's on Soul Note as a quartet
on the above date, in addition to the ensemble track listed above, or maybe
it's part of that long track, as most of these performances tend to start as
a quartet and then the brass add on. I've never heard that 72:00 track
(above), so it's just a wild guess.

Another thing about the Soul Note release: I can swear I read somewhere
Brotzman was bitching that they had "edited him out on the album titled 'Olu
Iwa'", although he's credited there all right, ts and tarogato (obviously on
Track 1, ensemble). OK I played it repeatedly but coudn't hear any edits;
moreover, somewhere at 27' there's a searing ts solo, for about 4 or 5
minutes, sounds pretty much like Brotz, exactly like described by Art Lande
in the album's liner notes: "Peter Borzmann's dramatic push and cry...".
(Before I forget, there's no tarogato heard on the album.) If Brotzmann's
right about having been edited out, then the long solo must be by Frank
Wright? Elsewehere there's ts that sounds definintely like Frank Wright.
And I didn't hear _two_ saxophones playing together. I'm slightly confused.
Put in a nutshell: I think there's Brotz doing that long solo all right.
There's no tarogato. There's Wright on the same track elsewhere. Brotz and
Wright don't play together."

"Jason, you need to make a little correction in your Olu Iwa (SN) entry. You
list it as one date only: 4-12-1986, whereas Soul Note lists Track 1 -
ensemble with horns - (B Ee Ba Nganga Ban'a Eee!) as of 4-12-86 and the
other track - quartet - (Olu Iwa - Lord of Character) as of 4-11-86.
the official Olu Iwa, track two, is a quartet, too, and is dated 4-11-86 (Rick, I stick to the dates on _my_ Soul Note copy)" - igor

"that material (i mean track 2 of the Soul Note) is different from the one you gave me

looks like the one you gave me and track 2 of the official Olu Iwa complement each other and come from the same concert

if that's so, then the reference in your disco (above) isn't quite accurate, plus it's 72:00, not 57 or so on the one you gave me?

Unless, of course, they played both with and without woodwinds on that date (4-11-86)" -igor

(All compositions, Cecil Taylor)

the audience recorded cdrs have been analyzed very thoroughly by igor danilishen:

12-4-86 (2 CDR) you (Jason) gave me recently

To start with, it's a great set and the recording is very good!!

Disc 2 (49.36)

This is, note for note, Track 1 (B Ee Ba...) from the Soul Note album,
except that it's split into 2 tracks (7:52 and 39:54). I don't think there
was any special reason to do that, as it's a continuous performance.
The short Track 3 (1:49) is a piano solo. New.

Disc 2 (78:09)

and what a great disc it is

1. 10:16
2. 1:06
3. 27:25
4. 39:17

(timings may not be exact to the second)

Tracks 3 and 4 are actually one track split in two. Maybe the tape was
flipped or something. I hear an overlap. Starts sans horns, then the
trombone, then the saxes, and yes you can hear it's Brotz and yes the 2
saxes do play together... Although... Do I hear more than 2 saxes at one
spot? maybe just a hallucination, the sound is so thick it gives an
impression it's more than it is.
