"...[the concert] was televised. When we got to the Airport a [female] police officer, and there were many, recognized me and let me through with my bags and 5 trap cases, no problem. Then Cecil, who came afterwards, was made to go to the office and searched-- needless to say he was enraged." --Andre Martinez correspondence to RL, 02.10.16

"This was a great little place, with the stage was in the middle of the room. People all around you and above because there was a balcony that went around the stage. This was a great hit, lots of good vibes and a packed house. [The crowd was] charged and that fueled us like being in a stadium."

"...a very educational experience for William and myself and the others: seeing how the other side lives. William and I went instrument shopping for trumpets which we still have... That Tomazo Stanko was from Poland and a celebrity was to our great benifit. Buddy Rich, Michele Rosewoman and Ornette Coleman also performed at this major event. Kamal Sabir (drummer for Ornette) was there along with Rosewoman's conga players, Eddie Bobe and Eddie Rodridguez, all of whom I grew up playing and studying with through the years. ...After concerts all festival participants would gather on the first floor of the hall and then be taken to various clubs to hang and jam. Some of the clubs were called AKWARIUM, HYBRYDY, RIVIERA-REMONT and the STODOLA, all nearby the concert hall... It was a wonderful trip for us and I remember when we were leaving I noticed alot of people crying, young people especially, and Jimmy said [it was] because their relatives were leaving and they were older-- perhaps they would never see them again. Young people at the time were not allowed to leave the country..." --Andre Martinez

"...watching the Paris tape... if you notice after the first set, we leave the stage and don't come back for encore. Reason being, the night before Cecil was put on the spot and was made to play with the Art Ensemble of Chicago as part of contract, and monies of entire tour was tied in somehow. So the maestro did perform with them. The next day the maestro plays, but one set only, as agreed.
So we play, the crowd is going wild chanting and all, and no band returns. You know these crowds can level the place if you don't respond quick enough. Needless to say the promoter is flipping out. The response from the maestro: "Well, if we are to play a SECOND SET!!! Then that will require SECOND SET!!! compensation. The frantic promoter then compensates the maestro, and
we return to the stage... The Paris gig was the finale of the Two Continents tour and of the Paris Jazz fest." --André Martinez correspondence to RL, 02.05.26; 02.10.29.
