"Before the
show we had lunch with Scavolo, a famous sculptor, who gave Cecil a
piece that day. Concert was in a beautiful part of
town-- you could look across the waters and see Africa. There were lots
of merchants in the streets selling all kinds of exotic birds,
very beautiful ones... I was translator for the band when necessary
since I understand and speak Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and
some French. And many times when boarding and unboarding planes I was
greeted as though I was from their country... Which the
guys found amusing." --Andre Martinez correspondence 02.10.16;

Nicaragua liner
notes, translated from German to English by Igor Danilishen (thanks
igor!):
"Cecil
Taylor's music originated in the sixties as an expression of African
Americans' revolt against the domination of U.S. imperialists in the
black
ghettoes and Vietnam.
Today, there
is a threat of Central America's becoming a second Vietnam. The
American invasion in free Nicaragua has been under way for several months.
So far,
the creme of the black avant garde jazz musicians play their
serenades at the White House in front of the President.
Taylor,
too.
However,
the Willisau Concert was an anthem of colonized African Americans
for the vulcanic uprising of the Third World, for freedom and peace.
We are producing
this record for you and against the mafia of the music
business. We dedicate it to the revolutionary people of Nicaragua,
especially to the black Sandinists of the Atlantic coast. The net proceeds,
approximately 7,000 franks, go for the support of a music cooperative
in
Nicaragua."

83.08.31 - Cecil
Taylor Unit: Jimmy Lyons, Rashid Bakr, Brenda Bakr, William Parker,
Andre Martinez / FABRIK Mid-Summer Jazz, Hamburg, Germany
"This was a strange hit perhaps the strangest we ever did... First
of all this place was a bomb factory during the war and had a very strange
vibe. When we got there [it] is was filled with hardcore raver-punk
types with Mohican haircuts-- not our usual crowd. Anyway we played
the first set and played our butts off and the response from the crowd
was luke-warm. Cecil and crew went to dressing room for a break, Cecil
in amazement said "what the hell is going on here this crowd is
strange or very demanding". He then suggested that Rashid and I,
followed by William and Jimmy, then the Maestro, do a whole percussion
intro batucada style to start the second set. The crowd flipped, they
danced on tables and then started chanting, just going wild. We then
played the set and they were hooked, as the standing ovations and encores
proved..." [Andre Martinez correspondence to RL]

William Parker, Andre Martinez / Messina, Sicily "...We did a concert
TV show in Messina Sicily, titled "6 Messina Jazz Meeting",

the place were equipped with machine guns." [Andre Martinez correspondence

"I remember
walking the streets looking at the stores and at tools with William.
I learned a lot about [my] Heritage on this trip and do remember how
wonderful it was to see Latin names on banks and huge complexes on a
plaque in front of the buildings, a lot more reassuring than what I
had to see back home at the time. Definitely an uplifting experience,
the people were wonderful, and the food
was great... Zaragoza was Oct. 26-- I have a huge poster of event autographed
to me from Max Roach [who] writes 'Fly Strong Andre!!' " Andre
