Original broadcast WCBN-FM / National Public Radio "Jazz Alive"

The Power Center
Michigan State University at Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor, Michigan

1.Unknown title [32:08]
2.Cecil Taylor announcement [00:20]
3.Petals (incomplete) [13:50]

Rick Lopez has some very interesting anecdotes that Cecil bandmate, Marc Edwards wrote about this show here on his site.

This tape is the second set of the Ann Arbor concert. (Does a recording of the first set exist?) Track one is an interesting piece in that it differs from the usual Taylor ensemble methodology: The piece begins with a drum solo (there is a split-second drop-out about 1:00 in); leads into a piano-tenorsax duet; [11:00 in] segues into a piano-altosax-drum trio segment; [18:00 in] becomes a piano-trumpet duo until ending. --Rick Lopez

The applause following track one leads to Cecil Taylor's calling out "Petals... just once through... Petals..." The very ending of this track is cut off-- (just a few moments from where the announcement by NPR appears on the inferior tape discussed below. *) --Rick Lopez

* There is also a tape circulating listed as "2 tracks, 48:00."
On this tape the tracks have been somehow reversed. The sound quality (not very good on track 1) descends to near horrible on the"unknown title," and proceeds to the end commentary by A.B. Spellman of NPR's "Jazz Alive." The 2nd track begins and ends w/ edit cuts. Taylor's voice is not heard here. Strange (and sad) how these things get cut up. If anyone owning the piss-poor version of this session tape wants an improved copy, send me your copy along with a blank tape and SASE, and I'll dub it for you. Feel free to pass word along to anyone who you know who either passed this version on to you or has received it from you. It must be killed. --Rick Lopez

"Since we were in Philadelphia, Sun Ra attended at least one of the shows. I can't recall if he was there for all three nights. Many of the players in his band also came. They really enjoyed the music. These performances drew a sizeable crowd. A good audience helps to make things happen." -- Marc Edwards, correspondence to Rick Lopez
